How Not to Tell Your Story

by Bob Poole on August 8, 2011

I don’t care what political party you identify with. You need to read this article.

“What Happened to Obama?”

It was published yesterday in The New York Times and written by Drew Westen, a professor of psychology at Emory University. I truly hope you’ll take the time to read it. Here is a link. The role of story in sales in marketing is of the utmost importance. This is a classic story of how not to tell your story.

Thank you for taking the time to read. There are lots of comments on the NY Times but I also welcome your thoughts here.

Thank you.

I think Drew should be president. I’d vote for him. Anyone who can write like that deserves to be president. We already know that being qualified in things that count, like leadership, experience and a record of dealing with tough issues don’t matter. If we can elect a president based on race, (I’m not being racist. As a reporter 100% of the people I interviewed while covering the election told me they were voting based on race and would keep him in office even if he screwed up because he was Black.) why not one based on writing ability?

Without a doubt, one of the best written pieces I’ve read in a long time.

I hope Obama gets mailed 1,000,000 copies and that he takes the time to read it a couple of times. Then maybe – just maybe – he might wake-up.

I keep wanting to send him a postcard that says,
“LEAD, damnit!”

I wonder how many people we could get to send a copy of the article to him? Or, just a card with a few words that we could design and supply?

Wanna find out?

Virtual cards or real ones?

Bob Poole August 12, 2011 at 8:54 pm

Real ones might be more effective. Virtual ones might get used more. I’m all for more effective. You write the copy and I’ll have it designed. What do you say?
