A client once advised me, when I was just starting out in business, that there are a lot of times when it’s better to ask forgiveness for an action than to ask permission to attempt the deed in the first place. If you try and succeed, you quickly learn that asking forgiveness is usually not needed at all. If you do end up asking forgiveness at least you’ve learned from the experience—something you don’t get when you ask permission.
When you focus on what you want to do and go after it without worrying about what people will think, or what people will say, you very often succeed, sometimes even brilliantly. And as you succeed more and more you find yourself asking for permission and forgiveness less and less.
