Can You Make a Quantum Leap?

I recently asked the question of some colleagues, "Is it possible for a group of disparate people to become a group of followers – a Tribe – in a Quantum Leap?"

Some organizations have lots of people who sit on the sidelines. Blogs have hundreds or thousands of readers who never add a single comment. If we agree that people want to be a part of something, then do we bring them into the tribe by drip, drip, drip – a little bit at a time? Or, is there something that can occur to turn that group into an impassioned Tribe overnight?

If you are a small business owner, entrepreneur, or a marketer this is extremely important to know.

I think it is possible with passion, leadership, unselfishness, and a willingness to engage and support your followers – and one fantastic story that people identify with and want to be a part of – right now.

Since it is election season, I think of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama as prime examples. Hillary went from never being elected to anything to becoming a US Senator with millions of followers who became her Tribe. Obama basically did the same thing. Their messages resonated with people and individuals that became a group that became followers that became a Tribe. They are used strategies and tactics well worth studying in detail so you can apply similar ideas to your group.

Business owners tend to think in terms of sequential growth. They look for some percent in growth each year and they take it one step at a time. It is possible to make a quantum leap – to think in terms of adding thousands of customers instead of hundreds, for example.

Here are some ways you might think about for building your Tribe and making a leap.

  1. Create exclusivity
  2. Introduce members to each other
  3. Be the example
  4. Listen carefully to what the group is saying
  5. Acknowledge you heard them and understand
  6. Let people in the group share their own stories to build bonds
  7. Identify the shared values of the group
