Once in a while you’ll find yourself in a sales situation trying to connect with a person and your gut tells you it just isn’t going to happen. You’re probably right. It isn’t your fault and it isn’t their fault. Sometimes our values or personalities are so different than the other person’s that a conflict is immediately apparent to both people.

You know how it is when you meet someone for the first time and you really hit it off immediately? The opposite can and does happen.

What can you do about it? You can waste a lot of time trying to convince yourself or the other person that what’s really important is the product or service you’re trying to sell. You can try to adapt to other person’s style and that is a possibility if it is only a conflict of personalities. But, if your values are in conflict stop wasting your time and energy trying to make the sale. Find a colleague or someone else in your company to step in for you. Cut your losses if necessary.

Listen carefully and trust your gut. You’ll be at peace with yourself and much more productive in the long-run.
