Don’t Stop Trying

don't give up

Sales can be a very lucrative career, but it’s also a tough one. Anyone who’s pursued a career in sales can tell you that they’ll often hear 10, 25, 50 or more “no thanks” responses to every “yes” sale they make. The thing that sets the best, most successful sales people apart from the average or poor salesperson is they keep trying. They’re relentless. They learn, they grow, they practice, they believe and most of all, they keep trying even when they fail, and even more after they fail.

You’re going to fail. You’re going to hear people say “no.” That’s just a part of the game. You are not a failure because you’ve failed. You’re only a failure if you don’t learn something from the fail and stop trying.

Quote:

“I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying.” -Michael Jordan

  1. Thanks for the encouragement, Bob – I think I hear the Journey song “Don’t Stop Believing” playing in the background….. ;-))

What we sales people must remember is that our audience is not everyone in the world. If I continue to look in the right places, I’ll find my specific audience and that relentlessness you mention, that is key.

    1. I know what you mean, Elaine. I thought the same thing and actually changed the title once but then I thought, “Let’s see if anyone brings up Journey.” You win!

  2. Funny, I just read the following quote in my alumni magazine: “Fail forward, fail fast, and fail fruitfully” – Martha Nace Johnson.

Interestingly, Ms. Johnson is the administrator of the federal General Services Administration. Not the sort of advice you’d expect from a civil servant!
