Heretic Job Hunting

If you’re job hunting – here are a few things you might want to consider before you jump into the deep end.

  1. How long has it been since you updated your resume? And, I don’t mean add the latest position or company. You need to think about what you have actually accomplished since you last wrote it and put that into bullet points that will jump out at the reader.
  2. Tell me about your successes and how they were measured. What value did you increase or earn for your company? It doesn’t have to be financial. Not everyone has the opportunity to increase financial value. Tell me how you changed the culture, increased morale, made the network more secure with you ideas, saved a client from leaving.
  3. If you’re not a professional copywriter you might want to consider investing a few bucks in having a professional take a look at the resume. That first paragraph on top better get my attention – fast!
  4. Tell me what kind of value (there’s that word again) you’ll bring to my company. Tell me how my investment in you is going to be outweighed by your value to the company.
  5. Tell me about how you are changing the world.
  6. Show me your digital footprint. Include the links to your websites, Facebook, MySpace, blog, etc. I’m going to find them anyway and I want to see the person you show the world.
  7. And, lastly, I’d like to read about something you’ve done to delight your clients or customers. Even if it meant you broke some rules and went up against the status quo – especially if you went against the status quo.

Actually, I’d entitle that paragraph "My Time As a Corporate Heretic."

Make it bold so I see it right away.

Leaders are usually heretics who change the status quo.

We definitely need more leaders in today's company.
