I’m Not That Type of Woman!

Bigstockphoto_face_of_woman_2269838I got a referral call from a friend of a client yesterday. The friend has been in a service business for almost two years and she’s thinking of giving up. She continues to bleed red ink and she told me she is looking for marketing help.

I asked what she personally has done so far to “market” her business. It was the usual Yellow Page ad, business cards, a brochure and some fliers she passed out to offices in her area. She had also attended some women’s networking events. She thought maybe she needed a web site.

Then she said, “I’m really not the marketing type.” I told her that if she really believes that she isn’t going to like what I’m going to say next.

I told her that the most important job of a business owner is marketing. You can be the best in the world at what you do (and that should be your goal) but if you are not ‘that type’ you aren’t going to make it in your own business. There was a few seconds of silence on the phone and then she said, “We need to talk then because I think I am the best at what I do and I just need to figure out how to let others know that.”

I asked her to tell me when considering all the other choices I had in the world to purchase her competitors’ services why I should buy from her. Her response was a lot of ‘me too’ type answers that apply to pretty much everyone in her field. I then asked her to tell me a story of why she got into the business, why she obviously feels passionate about what she does and what her customers say to her about why they come to her.

That was a start. She got the idea and we started talking about her unique story. You need to have your own story and it has to answer the question – why should I buy from you when I have all the other choices in the world?

And, oh yeah, first you do need to believe you are that type of person – the marketing type!
