There are a lot of professions with high turnover rates, and sales is one of them. It’s one thing to be rejected by a customer who doesn’t want to buy. It’s quite a shock to be rejected or let go by your company for any reason. The pressure to perform, as a salesman, can be intense and the penalty severe. Failing to deliver can often mean failing to remain employed at that one job, but it doesn’t mean you’ll fail at all other jobs.

Most of us see being fired, laid off, let go or released as the end of the world, or a sign of our competence as people. It’s neither. Not having a job at which we weren’t good at only opens us up to the possibility and opportunity to find the job we are great at. Don’t see an ending as “the end of everything.” See it as the beginning to something better. If you haven’t been fired at some time in your life, you’ll never be great. Greatness comes from learning and we only learn when we fail.


I didn’t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me.
