Lead or Chase – It’s Up To You

Are you still advertising in newspapers? Odds are that your rates have increased and circulation has decreased which means you are paying more and more to reach a prospect. And, I while the circulation numbers may be correct, in almost all cases they are heavily weighted toward coin boxes, restaurants, and news stands. Home delivery is down. The same thing is true of most magazines. I've canceled or let lapse a number of magazines and one newspaper only to see them continue to deliver to me for months past the end of service. They need the home delivery numbers.

What can you do if you're not getting the results you used to get from newspaper advertising? Direct mail is still working for many companies. You need to be creative and stand out from all the rest. And, you need to be a good copywriter (or hire one). It works even better when it is delivered with permission. People really do look forward to hearing from you if they have given you permission.

On the other hand, maybe it's time to quit spending so much time chasing new customers. Instead, invest your time and money in keeping the ones you have. Maybe you could spend time and money creating other products or services they would be happy to buy. Maybe you could also spend some time looking for a group of people who are looking for a product or service they can't find where they live or work right now. There are almost 300 million people in the US. I bet at least 300 or 3000 of them are waiting for you to lead them to what they want – to what they need. Do they know who you are? Where you are? How to communciate with you? They're out there.
