Puddle Jumping

puddle jumping

I have a friend who does a lot of hiking, even when it’s rainy, or has just rained. She says the rain makes everything greener and cleaner and also makes for better photos. She has just learned to take the puddles, rain and discomfort of hiking in the rain in stride and learned to focus on the advantages it brings. The puddles, cold, dampness and rain also bring another unexpected benefit she said. “There’s almost no one else on the trails when it rains.”

Sales are like that too. We’re just coming out of the three biggest holiday times of the year, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. It’s easy to say, “It’s the holidays, no one’s buying,” or “People have spent all their money, no one wants to talk to salespeople, they’re too distracted.” That may or may not be true. What is true is that those thoughts are puddles on the path. To succeed you’ve got to jump them and keep going. Why? Because when it’s rainy—e.g. holiday season, bad economy, end of the quarter, or whatever, there are fewer people on the trail and you’re more likely to make that sale, or at least a connection, a contact or get a referral.

Every path has its puddles. Successful people jump them and keep moving forward.

“Every path has its puddles.”
~Old English Proverb
