Sales Don’t Make the Salesperson – Relationships Do

One sale is like one nail. You can connect two things with it, but you can’t build a house from one nail. You can’t even build a house with a million nails. You need wood, windows, pipes and shingles. Think of all the things you use to build a house as the components. When you bring them all together you have something greater than the sum of the parts.

The purpose of sales is not to swap money for a product you represent or sell. The purpose of sales is to build relationships that create ongoing loyalty and demand for your product that results in sales.

Sales are the end result of a connection you make with your customers, suppliers and yourself.

You don’t close a sale, you open a relationship if you want to build a long-term, successful enterprise.
