When I think back about all the things I worried might happen, or could happen, or the hours I spent thinking about what I would do if something did happen, I laugh. Most of what we fear never comes true. Our fears simply pile up and cause us stress and distract us from thinking about the things we can do.

They are shadows, monsters we create in our own minds. If you can’t control a situation, an outcome, a decision, then don’t worry about it. If you can control it, or parts of it, then do the best you can and leave it to play out like it will. Don’t waste your time preparing to react. Invest your time in learning how to act, then act on the things you can do and leave your fears in the shadows where they belong.

“When I was a Boy Scout, we played a game when new Scouts joined the troop. We lined up chairs in a pattern, creating an obstacle course through which the new Scouts, blindfolded, were supposed to maneuver. The Scoutmaster gave them a few moments to study the pattern before our adventure began. But as soon as the victims were blindfolded, the rest of us quietly removed the chairs. I think life is like this game. Perhaps we spend our lives avoiding obstacles we have created for ourselves and in reality exist only in our minds. We’re afraid to apply for that job, take violin lessons, learn a foreign language, call an old friend, write our Congressman – whatever it is that we would really like to do but don’t because of personal obstacles. Don’t avoid any chairs until you run smack into one. And if you do, at least you’ll have a place to sit down.” —Pierce Vincent Eckhart

A quick note from Bob – Some of you might have noticed that yesterday’s doughnut didn’t get emailed until close to noon ET. The doughnut actually got posted on the website at 5:00am ET as always. But, a technical glitch on the part of our email service provider resulted in it not being emailed to you until late. Rest assured the doughnuts are always fresh around 5:00am ET and we ship them to you about 5:30am ET.

If you’re hungry for a doughnut and can’t wait, you can always go directly to the site. Thanks for being here!
