Internationally Recognized Photography Team Bev and Tim Walden

Bev and Tim Walden are a husband-and-wife photography team of Walden’s Photography in Lexington, Kentucky. This duo recognizes that running a business is a skill. They are superb artists, teachers, and businesspeople. The three of us discuss the art of building a business.

Bev and Tim Living Up to Their Potential

Bev and Tim met in high school in Lexington. Tim’s father was a passionate businessman, artist, and amazing person. He learned photography skills from his father, but more importantly, he learned about life. “I remember him asking me if I was living up to my potential.” His dad injured his back, had over a dozen surgeries, and was wheelchair-bound. Even with these challenges, Tim accompanied his dad to photograph over 1000 weddings all over the country.

Beware of having the Wrong Customers

When Tim picked up the photography business from his dad, he thought he had to be everything to everybody. “What I didn’t realize was that you can pick up the wrong customers.” They focused on selling products and services that had a strong emotional connection and selling the result of what they do, not what they do.

Bev and Tim stayed with black and white photography when color photography became big. People were wondering why they were sticking with black and white portraits. Bev says, “It made us stand out at the time, although I don’t think we recognized what we were doing at the time.” Bev creates and publishes their weekly newsletter, The Tuesday Tidbits, which gives advice on running your business.

Listen in as we talk about finding your ideal client, how they focused on the types of photography they were interested in, and why you need to narrow your focus to broaden your appeal. Learn why connecting emotion adds value, how creating an extraordinary experience is valuable to your client, and why being magical and repeatable is essential to your followers.
